Crater 2 - Fagrifoss waterfall and Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon

Mountain Expedition, Secret Craters, Waterfalls and Canyon

Join the mountain tour to one of the most beautiful waterfall in Iceland, Fagrifoss. (The name of the waterfall means literally beautiful waterfall.)  and visit the magnificent canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur often referred as the most beautiful one in the world.  Visit the secret wonderland of Landbrotshólar where we step into one of the hidden craters.

We start the tour by driving into the mountains on the same track as to Laki Craters.  We must cross some rivers on our way and after crossing the river Geirlandsá we stop at the waterfall Fagrifoss.

There are many waterfalls in Iceland and most of them are beautiful but Fagrifoss stands out and is probably the most beautiful waterfall we can find in Iceland.  It is not easy to access Fagrifoss on a normal 4x4 vehicle but in our Super Jeep nothing is impossible.  We stop for about 30 minutes to explore the waterfall and its surroundings.

We drive back the same road and stop at the magnificent canyon Fjaðrárgljúfur.   You will be let out at the higher end of the canyon where you walk downhill to the canyon and by the side of it.  The super jeep will wait for you at the parking place at the lower end of Fjaðrárgljúfur.  There is a WC at the parking place where you finish your walk. The walk takes about 40 minutes and is easy.

It will only get better.  Now we will visit the unique landscape of Landbrotshólar made of lava that flowed from the volcanic fissure Eldgjá.  Thousands of rootless Craters like on the Moon but now many of them are covered with grass. The craters are called gerfigígar or Pseudo Craters.  They are like fake craters or rootless cones that forms when lava comes over area with shallow water or wet soil.  Because of the heat and pressure from the lava it makes the water boil and forms enoumous steam explosions that makes this moon landscape of craters.  Pseudo Craters are unique form of lava that you can only find in Iceland.
